Patent Award

Trafford, PA – August 24, 2017 – Cleaveland/Price announces that it was recently awarded patent Nos. 9664710 and 9746498 for a sensory assembly system and method for monitoring power lines.  The sensor discoveries covered by the patents are the basis for the Cleaveland/Price LineScope® power monitor for overhead lines.

The new technology distinguishes itself from other sensing methods in that, as a wireless system, it has the capability of measuring ground or neutral currents as well as provide accurate real-time current and voltage readings for each phase of the power line.  While some wireless sensors can provide current and voltage readings to calculate power factor, VA, and watts values, they are unable to determine a ground current value.  Through synchronized voltage and current readings from the three phases, the patented Cleaveland/Price system can analyze the readings and determine the net real time sum of the three currents to calculate a ground current value.

For electric utilities, ground current value is an important measurement in determining the health of the electrical system.  The presence of ground currents is an unhealthy condition for an electrical system and can pose a potential safety risk as well as result in damage to equipment.

About Cleaveland/Price
Cleaveland/Price is a switch engineering and manufacturing firm with a diverse product portfolio including outdoor group operated high voltage switches with ratings to 345 kV, hookstick operated switches for a wide range of applications, enclosed switches including isophase disconnects, and custom designed high voltage switches for special uses. The company also manufactures switch control motor operators that enable utilities to integrate almost any switch into a SCADA or smart grid system in overhead, underground, and padmount applications. In recent years, Cleaveland/Price has introduced a highly accurate line sensor for distribution and transmission applications as well as new remote terminal unit (RTU) designs.

DistribuTECH 2017

Cleaveland/Price celebrated over 20 years of participation at DistribuTECH this year. This year the convention was held in sunny San Diego, CA. The booth team for 2017 consisted of Rae Sweeney, Pete Kowalik, Vince Cleaveland, Joe Andreyo, Ed Wallace, Hershel Roberson, Chad Bond, Al Bortak, Dan Driggers, Roy Onofrey, Justin Reinhart, Angelo Rometo, Joe Szwelnis, and Trish Conboy. The booth would not have been erected if it were not for the endless dedication and talents of Tim Kotch and Addison Whetzel.DistribuTECH 2017 Booth

Our new LineScope™ was the center of attention amongst our other products like the ReliaVac™ Vacuum Interrupter, Reliatronics RTUs, Center Break Switch, Grounding Mat, Padmount Switch, and Motor Operators, just to name a few. We had a record amount of people visit our booth this year, and we were recognized by WindStax for our automation gear.

DistribuTECH was a great success this year, and we are already planning for next year’s event.

Patent Award

two-wayCongratulations to Chuck Cleaveland, Pete Kowalik, and Cleaveland/Price ‘s design staff for being awarded a patent on innovative unitized 2-way and 3-way switch designs.  The new Cleaveland/Price unitized multi-way switch, designed to yield significant savings to utilities in transmission applications, is a first in the industry.  Cleaveland/Price has been championing the unitized single way switch concept and has long seen the need to take the concept to the next level.  The patent award is a validation of the unique approach to switch design that we have taken.  Look for the addition of unitized 2-way and 3-way products on the Cleaveland/Price website in the first quarter of 2017.

Single-Way Center Break Switches

Quick Install Switches

“Quick Install” CB-AV switches, adjusted and prepared for shipping

Cleaveland/Price “Quick Install” center break switches are unitized, phase-over-phase transmission switches that ship from the factory fully assembled and adjusted.  Unitized assemblies are available through 161 kV.   The switch pole units are “V” configuration CB-CV and CB-AV designs to minimize weight.

“Quick Install” switches are designed to address issues that customers have with other transmission switch designs.  Some customers have difficulty getting switches into adjustment when mounted on tall transmission poles. This is the result of the torsional “windup” of the vertical operating pipe between phases, which causes the three pole units to operate out of sync.  “Quick Install” switches are designed with “push-pull” interphase linkage so that the three pole units always move in unison, regardless of the length of the vertical operating pipe.

The switch ships from the factory fully adjusted with the linkage set in toggle in the closed and open positions. The switch stays in adjustment after installation, just as it was tested and operated at the factory.

The switches are typically supplied with standard strength porcelain insulators.  Polymer insulators are available on 69 kV and 115 kV switches with a maximum short time peak rating of 65 kA.   Center break switches can be supplied with arc horns, Cleaveland/Price Superwhip™, or single bottle ReliaVac® vacuum interrupters for loop splitting application.

Cleaveland/Price focuses its efforts in transmission on maximizing value to the end user through our “Quick Install” switches.   We offer fully assembled and adjusted unitized switch designs that save customers significant installation time, thus reducing crane usage time and labor costs.  Vertical break and center break “V” configuration switches are offered in single-way transmission applications.  For two-way and three-way applications, switch types RL-C2W and RL-C3W are available.

Another Cleaveland/Price product that is designed to save utilities significant money in asset costs is our effective Superwhip.   Through extensive testing and field service, the Superwhip has been proven to interrupt the capacitive current of many miles of transmission line.  In single-way applications, where an expensive full load interrupting device was required to break capacitive current, a pre-installed  Superwhip™  can be used instead.  For installations that require full load break, Cleaveland/Price offers the innovative ReliaVac® vacuum interrupter.

DB-A Aluminum Double Break Switch

The Cleaveland/Price DB-A is a three pole, group operated, aluminum double end break switch used primarily in substations. It is available at 345 kV, 2000A through 5000A.

The double side break design is useful in applications where there is limited overhead clearance and interphase distances need to be kept at a minimum. The switch is ideal for EHV applications where a naturally counterbalanced blade is advantageous.

  • Aluminum tubular blades
  • Non-cast aluminum terminal pads with NEMA standard hole pattern
  • High pressure, silver-to-silver line contacts at jaws
  • Stainless steel contact springs
  • Patented blade turnover mechanism designed to provide full blade rotation with minimal operating force
  • Hot-dip galvanized double channel base

Reference the DB-AV tab for drawings of the switch in a “V” configuration for low profile mounting.
