Vertical Break Switches

V2-C Copper Vertical Break

The Cleaveland/Price V2-C is a three pole, group operated, copper vertical break switch used primarily in substation applications. Copper switches are popular for coastal installations, however, copper oxide will develop on the copper parts.  To prevent oxidation of the copper parts, Cleaveland/Price offers an optional feature of tin-plating the copper parts.  The switch is available from 15 kV through 230 kV and a continuous current rating of up to 4000A.

V2-C Performance Features

  • All copper current carrying parts(aluminum blades at 161 kV and 230 kV high current ratings)
  • Unbreakable, non-cast copper terminal pads with NEMA standard hole pattern
  • Fully insulated journal bearing to prevent current flow through the live operating parts
  • Unbreakable, non-cast operating crank
  • Counterbalance springs, when supplied, are insulated from the current path as are the counterbalance spring ice shields.  The springs are made of stainless steel for life long corrosion resistance.
  • Silver-to-silver contacts at hinge and jaw
  • Stainless steel contact springs insulated from the current path
  • Hard-drawn, high conductivity copper contact fingers at hinge and jaw
  • Hot-dip galvanized single channel base on switches rated 7.2 kV to 69 kV, double channel base on switches rated 115 kV to 230 kV

V2-CAV Aluminum Vertical Break with Inclined Jaw End Insulator

V2-CAV

The V2-CAV uses the same live parts as the V2-CAhowever, the jaw end insulators are inclined.  By having the jaw end insulators inclined, the cable conductors establish electrical clearance from the base at the jaw end without the need for wire guides or outriggers.

The inclined insulator design makes the switch better suited for low profile substations where a vertical break switch is desired.   It is also ideal for transmission applications where conductor spacing is close and load interrupting devices are required.

This design is available from 23 kV through 230 kV.

Outdoor Group

Group Operated Switch Overview

138 kV CB-A InstallationCleaveland/Price offers many group operated switch types including vertical break, center break, double end break and single end break.  All of the switches are available with copper current carrying parts.  The switches are typically supplied as three pole switches for substation, transmission, and distribution applications. The switches can be mounted in the horizontal-upright, vertical, horizontal-underhung, or inclined position.

The switches are suitable for use in a variety of applications including line disconnecting and sectionalizing, circuit breaker by-pass and isolation, and transformer isolation.  Arc horns or quick break whips are available when small amounts of transformer magnetizing currents or line charging currents must be interrupted.

Full load break attachments are available for vertical break switches. Accessories needed to adapt the switch to a customer’s particular requirements are available.

The switch may be manually operated by use of a swing handle or wormgear mechanism or electrically operated by use of a Cleaveland/Price TP-C2 motor operator.

Cleaveland/Price’s switches meet ANSI C37, NEMA, and IEEE Standards and the rating requirements of IEC Standards.
